When I first met Scott in 2006, I was a complete type A personality. I was always on the go, had a packed schedule, and a to-do list a mile long. I was constant motion (and yes, I think that scared him a lot!) On the outside I looked fairly healthy, but what I was doing to my body was crazy. I lived on Diet Pepsi… and I am talking like 120 oz. a day! I also was a daily Advil user…and sometimes more than once. I always had tension headaches going on and I knew I could fix them with some ibuprofen, and I got to where I would take 4-5 of them at a time! (No, I am not proud!)
I started dating Scott the chiropractor, and that was a good thing (for many reasons). One day… as I was taking my dose of Advil, Scott looked at me and said, “You know your body is not lacking Advil.” I think I said, “What?”, and he repeated it. That got me thinking…..
Yes, Cindy did live on DP and Advil and I was concerned. I explained to her that our bodies were created to heal. When we are feeling pain, it is our body using its warning signal…something is off. I am not sure she believed me at first… but I just kept sharing with her what I knew about health.
We also started regular chiropractic care on Cindy. You may not know her whole story, but she had back surgery when she was 30 (before meeting me), and so she was unsure of chiropractic care at first. Keeping things aligned quickly lessened the headaches. Regular care also make the headaches less frequent.
None of us like being in pain, but masking the pain isn’t the answer. Let’s get to the root of the pain and go from there. With Cindy we talked a great deal about stress management, and also drinking water- she was very dehydrated which can also lead to headaches.
I have definitely come a LONG way from those days. I rarely take these pain blockers, and my soda drinking is almost to none (I do still enjoy one here and there!) I have found the importance of keeping my body aligned to help keep it healthy. It really all boils down to keeping our system functioning at its best. When friends ask me about chiropractic care, I now use this example…. Do you take your car in for regular upkeep (oil change, tire rotations, etc.) and the answer is usually YES. You don’t wait to change the oil until when the car burns up. It is the same with our bodies— don’t allow the pain to come. Do the regular maintenance (regular visits to the chiropractor) and you won’t have to deal with as much “break down”.
People ask me how often they should get adjusted… and that can be different for everyone. If you are just getting started, I would say you need more regular treatments (2-3 per week for a few weeks). Once you are in good alignment, we can move to maintenance of 1-2 times per month. This is something I discuss with each patient individually to find out what the goals are and how we can get there.
